Chan’s Journey to World Championships

Leanne Chan’s fencing season took a different plan than expected since a year ago in her training. In February, Chan’s last journey was to Dubai, UAE. Chan found herself amidst the 2018 Asia Cadet & Junior Championships. Through hard work and determination, Chan is now wrapping up her season as a member of the Cadet National Team of Singapore. Chan will join her teammates abroad this week for a final training camp, where they will travel together for the Junior & Cadet World Championships in Verona, Italy.

During Chan’s debut performance at the Cadet Individual Asia Championships in Dubai, Leanne racked up 3 victories and 2 losses in the pool round and was seeded 14th out of 36 heading into the direct elimination bracket. She won her first bout 15-14 against Alexis Loh, a fellow teammate for Singapore. She lost her next bout to Jueun Lee (KOR), the eventual silver medalist in the event.

In the team event, the Singapore team edged out Kazakhstan 45-42 to advance to the semi-finals but they fell to the team from Hong Kong. Hong Kong would go on to win the team gold medal; Singapore earned bronze.

On behalf of Mid-South Fencers’ Club, we would like to congratulate Leanne, her teammates, and the Singapore coaching staff on their achievements. The 2018 Junior and Cadet World Championships will take place April 1-9, 2018 in Verona. We look forward to cheering on another team this year other than Team USA!
