Yoga Coming to MSFC this Fall

The art and practice of yoga is to invite aliveness and embodiment. Through stretching, strengthening, breath, and relaxation, we energize ourselves and release toxicity and tension. We cultivate flexibility and improve the range of motion in the joints. Through regular practice, we develop a core strength that gives way to a deep sense of harmony, balance, and resilience. As a wise old yogi once said, “Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape.”

This class is for individuals with some yoga experience. Each class will combine seated and standing postures with vinyasa, [...]

Coastal Carolina Division

This past weekend was the NC Division’s annual fall meeting. As an organization we usually meet in August (planning session) and at Divisional Qualifiers (to vote in officers). We had average attendance, a small group, but mostly “the core.” Most of the usual things (scheduling) had been tidied up and we had a great planning/brainstorming session about developing coaching clinics in the state, how to/can we better serve collegiate clubs and a nice patting on the back for ‘hangin’ in there’ with some radical management changes in how our organization works. And boy, does it [...]

International

Licensure

March 20th of this year, I took the hardest exam I’ve taken, since perhaps the final exam of my Chem 51 class at UNC. But, instead of the cryptic ins and outs of Inorganic Chemistry, I was sitting for my licensing exam to become an international sabre official. The preparation time was about the same for both exams, but the classroom was different. Instead of listening to Dr. Jicha ramble on about electron orbits and chelates, I prepared for this exam by standing in front of lots of fencing bouts, both in the clubs where I trained and at the national [...]

Congratulations to Veterans World Championship Alternate VIC MINTON!

Victor Minton was named 2nd Alternate on the 70+ Men’s Sabre Team, designated to represent the US at the 2010 Veterans World Championships in Porec, Croatia this 2009-2010 season. Vic should be notified toward the end of the month if he will be needed for team participation.  Vic was the oldest sabre fencer to compete in a USFA National event during the 2009-2010 season, which wrapped up at Summer Nationals in Atlanta last week.  Vic was one of six medalists from Mid-South to end up on the medal stand during this National Championship event.  Other medalists [...]

  • Equipment Care Resources

If you’re new to fencing, there are a lot of moving parts to get used to, and the care of that equipment can be just as mysterious as the acquisition of it. Attached are two checklists prepared by MSFC’s Kate Clarkson: a checklist for pre-tournament equipment preparation, as well as a tool list for strip-side equipment care and [...]
