Celebrating a Decade of Fencing

Mid-South is celebrating our first decade. CAN YOU BELIEVE ten years? While we are thinking about it, when did we actually start? Do we count the move to Durham? When we incorporated? How about when we were teaching classes at First Health of the Carolinas? Through all of our iterations, transitions, growing pains, and celebrations, Mid-South evolved due to great people who believed in a community of fighters. Now, in the year 2017, we are more strong, wise, [Read More]

Badger on VET World Championships

Carl introduced himself to our fencing community as a fencing parent, but after the kids headed off to college, Carl got busy training. Read about Carl’s recent experience at the Veteran World Championships… Going to the Veteran World Cup in fencing is (I hope!) not just a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but it was memorable and a great experience. In some ways it did not differ much from a NAC or Nationals, at least in my event. The level of [Read More]

The Ryder Cup Story

This fall Mid-South hosted one of the first USA Fencing RJCC (Regional Junior Cadet Circuit) events in our region, we called it, The Ryder Cup. About the same time this event was happening we were contacted by two Duke University undergraduates who were interested in using the club to put together a feature film as a course requirement. The course is called Advanced Media & Innovation, taught by Amy Unell and Carson Mataxis. This assignment [Read More]

US Fencing Development Status Check

On Labor Day weekend, thirty-four participants, spanning three generations of fencers aged 11 to 84, gathered to explore saber fencing. Our topics included what’s changing, what patterns are being recognized, and what work needs to be done in order to best arm our next generation of fencers. Our leader for this event was US Women’s National Saber Coach, Ed Korfanty. Our club “won” Korfanty’s visit from an Indiegogo fundraising challenge and helped open the doors [Read More]

My First Longsword Class

Today I got to be a fencing student! Triangle Sword Guild offers free introduction on the longsword Saturdays and Tuesdays. The instructor, Ben Strickland, and I have have been playing email tag for a few months in attempt to bring an introduction course or seminar to Mid-South. The release of the New York Times post in September compelled my curiosity in fencing sport archeology. The concepts were generally the same as modern sabre, but scoring is somewhat is different. The video in [Read More]

Year in Review and The Search for Kung Fu

Sometimes looking back is embarrassing, other times it is painful, awe-inspiring or even oddly nostalgic.  In 2014 I have had to look inside personally and we as an organization have had to dig deep. This year has seen many powerful things happened at our club: friendships have grown and some were broken; medals were won; and, most importantly, we have evolved. Being Mid-Southish, our way, is on the way to being an actual thing in 2015. [Read More]
