Ryder and Coach Jen aftre the medal presentation.Mid-South fencers traveled to Atlanta, GA, this weekend to compete in the USFA Division II/III North American Cup. On Friday, Jordan Benge, Travis Clarkson, Stephen Pashby, and Neal Smith all fenced in the Division III Men’s sabre, with great results. Ryder Darwin brought home the club’s first national medal of the year, placing sixth. Jordan Benge, in his first national tournament, finished 12th, Travis was 13th, Neal was 38th, and Stephen was 55th.

Mid-South Grand Open

On February 21 and 22nd, the Mid-South Fencers’ Club will host their 2nd Annual Grand Open, to celebrate their first year in Durham NC. The tournament will be held at the Mid-South Fencers’ Club, at 1104C Broad Street, in Durham. The tournament will host Y12, Y14, and Open Sabre events on Sunday, as well as Open Mixed Foil and Epee events on Sunday. On Saturday, the club will host a gala final at 5:30, with the final of each sabre event for that day.

Of course, no Mid-South event is complete without great food and drink- we hope you’ll come help us celebrate afterward as we host a reception for the fencing community.

Mid-South Sweeps Foil and Epee Team Invitational

Fencers from the Mid-South Fencers’ Club fenced at the All-American Fencing Academy’s $10 Cup Team Invitational this weekend, with solid victories over the other participating squads. The team of Michael Glapion, Neal Smith, and Dave Aitken defeated both the AAFA Foil and Epee Teams, taking home the $10 Cup. This was the first local outing for a Mid-South foil or epee team.

Junior Olympic Qualifiers-Day Two

Day two of the Junior Olympic Qualifiers saw more success for the MSFC- the club ended the weekend with seven qualifiers to the Championship event in New Mexico. The day started with Charlie Dobbins winning the Cadet event, with Travis Clarkson and Ryder Darwin tying for third. Mason Erb finished fifth, also qualifying for the Championships. In the Women’s event, Avonlea Bryant-Comstock and Claire Carson finished first and second, respectively, both qualifying to the championship event.

Junior Olympic Qualifiers- Day One

The 2008 Junior Olympic Qualifiers have started off well for Mid-South, with a sweep of Junior Men’s medals, and a gold medal in the Junior Women’s medals. In the men’s event, Jackson Bryant-Comstock won the gold, Benjamin Badger took home the silver, and Charlie Dobbins and Brendan Badger took third and fourth respectively. In the women’s events, Avonlea Bryant-Comstock took home the gold medal. Avonlea, Jackson, Bejamin and Charlie all qualified to the 2009 Junior Olympic Championships in Albequerque, New Mexico, to be held this February. [...]

Mid-South at NCFDP Open #1

Athletes from the Mid-South Fencers’ Club participated in the NCFDP Open sabre event September 14th, with great results for the start of the season! Seven fencers competed representing Mid-South: Jackson Bryant-Comstock, who finished second, Benjamin Badger, who was eighth, Travis Clarkson and Ryder Darwin who were twelfth and thirteenth respectively, Avonlea Bryant-Comstock, who was fifteenth, Mason Erb, who was twenty-first, and Claire Carson who was twenty-third. Mid-South at Raleigh Fencers’ Tournament

Fencers from the MSFC competed on Saturday, August 24, at the Raleigh Fencers’ Club’s “D and Under” sabre event. Claire Carson, James Dobbins, Jordan Benge, and Mason Erb all competed in this first tournament of the season,with great results. Mason and James both finished in the bronze medal round, and Jordan Benge took the gold medal. Claire placed sixth overall. [...]

Mid-South Results from Southeast Sectional Champs

Jackson Bryant Comstock is second from the left, Brendan Badger is second from the right.Fencers from the Mid-South Fencers' Club competed May 3rd and 4th, 2008, in Columbia, SC, for the chance to quailify for events at the USFA National Championships  in San Jose, CA in July.

Benjamin Badger surprised the field with a bronze medal at his first Junior Sectional Championships, finishing one round higher than his clubmates Jackson Bryant-Comstock and Brendan Badger, who took fifth and seventh places, respectively. Charlie Dobbins finished ninth in the men's event. Avonlea Bryant-Comstock took the silver medal in the Junior Women's event.

Avonlea Bryant-Comstock had a bronze medal finish in the Senior Women's event, qualifying for the Division I-A Championship in San Jose. Brendan Badger also had a bronze medal finish in the Senior Men's event, making the elite eight final ahead of clubmate Jackson Bryant-Comstock, who finished seventh. Charlie Dobbins and Benjamin Badger finished eleventh and twelfth respectively. Both Brendan and Jackson qualified for the Division I-A championships.
