Badger Makes WORLD TEAM 2017 – Team Shines at Summer National Championships

The 2016-2017 competition season was an exciting one for Mid-South Fencers’ Club. We had great representation at the Summer National Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah in July. Mid-South returned home with 4 medals, we had 13 athletes competing in a field of 4,052 fencers from 362 different fencing clubs. We’re proud of how everyone fenced and are excited to start into the new season.

Congratulations to the Carl BADGER who, for the second year in a row, made the Veteran-60 World Championships Team. See his announcement here:

Miller, Shealy, Chan BRONZE in Senior Women’s Saber Team

We had a strong start to Nationals with both Chan and Miller fighting hard over the first two days. Leanne finished 24th in Div 1A after a tough fight and a 15-14 loss for Sky to make top 32 in Div 1. They both fought hard, had full commitment and were completely coachable throughout. Fired up and in the game, they partnered with Maggie Shealy (NCFPD) to battle the Senior Women’s Saber Team field with an amazing win 45-44 in the round of 8. They lost to PDX in the semi-finals, and rallied to beat a strong team from Lone Star Fencing Center to win the bronze medal.

Dylan Woodward made the cut for DE’s in Junior Men’s Saber and was solid on long defense and very creative. Although he lost his first DE, he fenced well. Junior Women’s Saber was just as challenging, though Miller prevailed and finished 15th with some very strong DE’s under her belt. This was Sky’s first time earning her place on the Junior National Points list, and propelled her position up the Cadet rankings.

Our veteran fencers performed fantastically with Carl Badger finishing 3rd and qualifying for the World Championships for the 2nd year in a row. Tammy and David both had top 16 finishes, with narrow losses to make the medal round.

Woodward and Badger sharing a laugh.

Skyler Hoffman made his first Nationals debut in Y 14 MS and won his first DE when he was down 14-12. It was all tactical adjustment, which made Coach Jen very proud! Speaking of firsts, Luis Cox won his first DE in the Y 12 event, also making Coach Jen extremely proud! It’s an understatement to say that this Nationals was filled with many proud, ear-to-ear grin moments.

Miller continued to dominate, and placed 5th in the Y14 event. She successfully made her name known and one to be feared for the upcoming season.

Summer Nationals wrapped up with Connor Woodward exploding 5-1 out of Y10 pools. He kept the momentum strong and clutched a top 16 finish, wrapping up his Y10 career. Connor earned recognition as a USA Fencing Regional Points winner in Y10 for region 6.

Minton with conviction to finish out his Vet-40 tenure strong.

The Mid-South Fencers’ Club Travel Team is already in training for the upcoming competitive season. Carl will head to Veteran World Championships in Maribor, Slovenia October 15th through 21st.

The 2018 Summer National Championships are set to be hosted in Louisville, KY on June 28th through July 7th.
