Durham, NC. Sky Miller earned her first international title in Moedling, Austria over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. Her Gold Medal finish is highlight of her progression this season. This was Miller’s second international competition. In early December, Miller finished 26th at her international debut in Germany. After this weekend’s result, Miller ranks 6th in the USA Cadet national rankings.
Scores from this weekend’s result:
Miller def. Jolien Corteyn (BEL), 15-7
Miller def. Faustine Clapier (FRA), 15-7
Miller def. Luca Szucs (HUN), 15-11.
There were two rounds of pools before the direction elimination round. Miller’s record was 11-1. Sky’s father, Paul Miller, was texting her coaches back home throughout the day. Miller states after the return home, “With so many fencers, from many countries, and different fencing styles, it was a bit surreal to see Sky move up the ladder to eventually win the Gold Medal in Austria this weekend. I also realize there was nothing magical about her progression, she has put the time in fencing and balanced it with school and a social life, to a point where this is possible. What we provide as parents in an opportunity to grow, and with our guidance, a way to ease into the transition of the hard knock of life through fencing.”
The club would like to offer heartfelt appreciation to her supporters over the weekend. Read more about the success of this trip for Team USA over the weekend here.
