Tournaments in the United States are sanctioned by the United States Fencing Association and often grouped by experience, age, and gender.

Competition requires commitment to achieve your goals. We encourage fencers who are interested in competing to discuss their goals with a coach so that we can establish a plan for them to succeed. Here is a brief video that shows how modern saber is scored.

Local Competition

You don’t have to travel great distances to find competition! Competition at the local level includes tournaments held in Durham, and nightly bouting at the fencing club. We sponsor several local tournaments each year, and we also encourage competition while bouting among your club mates. All local fencers can participate at this level.  Check out our local tournament schedule to find out more about local events.

Regional Competition

The Southeast Region offers many competitions in states that border North Carolina from Virgina to Florida.  The level of competition at a regional tournament can vary greatly. You can best be prepared by participating in individual and group lessons and participating in open bouting with other fencers during regular club during the week.

National and International Competition

The commitment that it takes to be competitive at this level can be great, and so are the rewards. The high-level fencer prepares by bouting several nights a week, taking individual lessons, and should be ready to spend the time and money traveling to competitions in other states and possibly other countries. Fencers who qualify to represent the United States on World Cup and World Championship teams travel abroad monthly. Fencers at this level accumulate points toward national and international rankings, which determine their placement on National Teams. These points are also a qualification path to the Junior Olympics, the National Championships, and the World Championships.
